Welcome to the City of Gladstone
GIS Mapping
GIS is an
acronym for Geographic Information System. Simply put, a GIS
combines layers of information about a location to
give you a better understanding of that place. Gladstone has
been developing a GIS for more than five years and during this
time it has played a role in almost every function of the City.
When one thinks of geographic
data, the first thing that may come to mind is a map. Even
though maps may be the most visible product of GIS they are not
GIS. GIS is actually the combination of computer software,
hardware, data and personnel to help manipulate, analyze and
present information that is tied to a spatial location. Perhaps
you could call it "Smart Maps".
The City's layers of
information include parcel boundaries, addresses, ownership,
property use, zoning, flood plain zone, voting precincts, code
enforcement activity, crime events, streets, water mains, sewer
mains, storm drainage, etc. What layers of information you
combine depends on your purpose such as finding the best
location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage,
viewing similar crimes to detect a pattern, and so on.
Our GIS has provided layers
of information and subsequent analysis for every study that has
been conducted in the last 3 years. These studies include the
comprehensive storm water, sanitary sewer, recreation center,
public safety needs, Fire station #1 relocation, public works
master plan, Neighborhood Preservation Task Force, the North Oak
corridor master plan, and the water quality. Presently, work is
taking place to implement an electronic zoning map, to analyze
both our street maintenance program and public safety call data
in order to better locate our public safety resources.
The uses for GIS are truly limitless and have become an
invaluable tool to help the City perform its function better.
