FENCES and FENCE WALLS

Do I need a permit to add or replace a fence or fence wall?
Yes, a building permit is required for fences and fence walls.
Exception: Fences and fence walls not over six (6) feet high.

What do I need to submit in order to receive a permit?
> Completed building permit application.
> Additional information may be required by the Building Official.
> Any additional information required to clarify your application. Proof of ownership (if recently purchased).
> The building permit fee is due at the time the permit is issued and is accepted in the form of a check, cash, or credit/debit card.

What materials are allowed?
All materials used in construction of fences and walls must be resistant to the elements.
Approved material include:
> Chain Link (side and rear only)
> Split Rail
> Wood
> Plastic
> Vinyl
> Masonry
> Stone
> EFIS
> Split Face Block
> Ornamental Iron
Prohibited Materials include:
> Chain Link (front yard only)
> Metal
> Razor Wire
> Barb Wire
> Electric
> Cinder Block

Construction Requirements:
> Fences and fence walls can be installed up to the property line, but all posts, bases and other structural parts, shall be located completely within the boundaries of the lot on which it is located.
> All fences and fence walls erected adjacent to a public street shall have the finished side of the fence facing toward the street.
> Fences and fence walls located in the front yard shall be constructed with a four (4) inch minimum open spaced, picketed type fence.
> The owner and/or occupant of the property shall maintain their fence or fence wall in good condition at all times. If a fence or fence wall is found to be in a deteriorated condition and/or in need of repair, the Building Official may order the fence or fence wall to be repaired, replaced or removed; depending on the condition of the fence or fence wall.
> Fences or fence walls shall not be installed in or through a stormwater easement or flood plain.
> Fences or fence walls install in or through a utility easement shall be at the responsibility of the property owner and any repairs required after a utility company or the City has been in shall be the responsibility of the property owner.

What Inspections are needed?
A Final inspection shall be made after the permitted work is completed and prior to use.

The fee for a building permit is based on the value (or cost) of the proposed structure you are building.
